Yoga and ecology are not a radical pairing. Yoga’s connection to the natural world is an inherent one that we are reminded of every time we do a Sun Salutation or Downward Dog, or hear our teacher use words like “root” and “ground.”

In fact, many asanas in yoga are inspired by nature and are named behind it[ example lizard pose, lion breathing]. Integrating nature into our design and finding a balance that supports the people and our planet at the same time should be our focus.

A green Yoga movement can be described as a modern manifestation of the ancient yogi’s practice. Ancient Yogis are believed to be living in harmony with their environment.

By applying ancient philosophy to today’s eco-concerns, yogis are inspired to build green yoga studios.

How can Yoga Studios Transform into Green Studios?

Yoga studios can become greener by practicing few steps:

1. Replacing Yoga mats:
Yoga mats available commercially are mostly made of foam, PVC and rubber. Is it really necessary? I have seen people practicing yoga without a mat.
But if it is comfortable to use a mat, then there are other alternatives to these yoga mats- cotton mats, carpets and mats made with eco-friendly materials. Flooring mats or bamboo flooring can also be used.

2. Scent free studio:
The good smell would keep the studios pleasant and attractive. Scent need not be necessary for a yoga studio as everybody can be comfortable with nature. If a good scent is very much required aromatic plants can be grown in studios.

3. Organic & Safe cleaning products:
The cleaning products have toxins in them. Using botanical cleaners free from phosphates, nitrates and sulphates would spread the herbal aroma in the studio.

4. Yoga equipment:
Yoga equipment is necessary to enjoy the depth of every asana. The equipment need not be personalized for students. Second-hand equipment can be used in studios if they are in good condition.

5. Use Radiant heat panels:
Few yoga studios are designed for Bikram yoga or just to keep the place warm. An alternative to conventional heating systems, Radiant heat panels can be used. It uses 30% less energy than other sources of heat and the radiant heat warms your body and soul.

6. Go paperless:
Thanks to technology. It has helped us reduce the use of paper. In a studio, use of papers can be reduced by using systems. Forms can be replaced with laminated reusable forms.

7. Eco-friendly Yoga wear:
Fashion is everywhere. Yoga wear can also be eco- friendly made from organic or recycled materials.

8. Organic Paints:
By using low VOC/no VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paints on our walls less toxic substances can be released to the earth.

9. Energy efficient:
Keep practicing yoga under a light lit using an efficient and sustainable source of electricity. Bulbs can be replaced with LEDs, solar energy can be used. Rainwater harvesting systems will help in conserving water.

10. Workshops:
Eco-friendly sustainable practices need to be taught to everyone. This would motivate everyone to step up for sustainability. conducting regular workshops on green yoga will spread awareness of the practice.

The number of Green yoga studios who follow the above practices are very few in the world. Slowly the trends are increasing with an environmental concern.

Just a few Green yoga studios cannot make a huge difference. But, Yoga means “unity” in Sanskrit. As the famous saying goes- Unity has power, together many yoga studios can potentially spread awareness of sustainable yoga practice. When yoga teacher, students and studios start working together for green studios an environmental concern will be developed among everyone.

Yoga has transformed many individuals to live happily with peace. Hope it can transform people around the globe and support sustainable development.
