Jackfruit known as Chakka in Kerala became the official fruit of the state. Many people of this generation might have not even seen this fruit for real. It is the largest fruit famous for its rich aroma and taste. As part of this declaration on June 5, students in schools across the state will plant 6O lakhs jackfruit saplings. The state education department happily revealed its decision to involve students in the mission. The event will be carried out as part of the Haritha Keralam Mission.
Correspondingly, the department will also encourage students to plant saplings in their backyards too. Members of Scouts and Guides, Student Police Cadets and Junior Red Cross volunteers will be an interim part of the programme. Moreover, the students will receive lessons about the health benefits of jackfruit. The government aims to make the fruit a “brand” in the market across the country as well as abroad.

The government invites entries for a video contest to showcase the benefits of the fruit. The video should be of 5 minutes length showing the richness of the fruit. The winner will be awarded a cheque of Rs. 25,000.
Not to mention the kudumbashree women of Kerala have also played a vital role in promoting this miracle fruit. The kudumbashree is a woman empowerment mission by Government of Kerala. The members of kudumbashree make various edibles out of jackfruit. In fact, some of these have great value in the international market. The Agriculture Minister Sunil Kumar recently inaugurated a complete jackfruit restaurant in the Malappuram district. The restaurant has eatables from coffee made of jackfruit to chicken curry out of jackfruit.
