Earth Hour

A day every year, billions of people around the globe join in contributing to support the planet in mitigating climate change. March 24th, Saturday 2018 at 8:30 p.m. is the earth hour. A movement started by World Wide Fund for Nature is an annual event to fight and sensitize people against climate change.

How to take part?

It is simple, show your commitment to the planet by just switching off all your non-essential lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at your local time. This one simple gesture can create an overall effect which is massive as in the past –

• For just nine Earth-Hours that Dubai participated since 2008, the city saved at least 1,596 MWh of electricity and managed to prevent 958,000 kg of carbon dioxide from escaping into the atmosphere. The quantum of energy savings is enough to power 400,000 homes for an entire year. The carbon emissions savings is equivalent to removing 202 passenger vehicles off the road for a full year.

• According to the 2015 WWF report on Earth Hour, electricity consumption in Hong Kong dropped by 4.08%, which is equivalent to a reduction in CO2 emission of approximately 138 tons.

• The Philippines saved up to 611 MWh of electricity in a mere one hour in 2009, which is said to be equivalent to shutting down a dozen coal-fired power plants for the same amount of time.

Vietnam managed to save 500 million VND (US$23,809) in 2011 Earth Hour by saving power.

• IN 2017, Toronto’s electricity use dropped by 2.8%. The most successful Earth Hour Toronto campaign took place in 2009 when the city achieved a 15.1% load drop.

Join BuzzOnEarth in participating this year Earth Hour. Let’s together tackle climate change and make a future where people and wildlife flourish.
