The house Sparrow population in Kottayam and Kochi is coming down fast, according to a survey conducted on Sunday.
According to Punnen Kurian Venkadath, secretary, Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) here, who led the survey in the run up to the World Sparrow Day celebrations, the deep fall in population of sparrows in their traditional habitats in Kottayam town was alarming.

The annual survey, conducted for the first time here in 2012, had identified 740 sparrows in 10 habitats. “This had come down to a dismal 64 this year,” Dr Kurian said.
